In una torrida estate del 1978, un ragazzo vede la mamma per l’ultima volta. E’ un addio, ma lui non lo sa.
Su questo abbraccio perduto, Roberto Alajmo ha costruito “L’estate del ’78” (Sellerio).
Uno scalino dopo l’altro: li sale Marco Di Stefano che sul romanzo ha costruito un’opera musicale in dieci capitoli, un racconto fluido che si immerge nelle parole. Ogni nota, melodia o brano è un riflesso musicale, specchio concavo di storie e personaggi. “L’estate del ‘78”, dieci brani che “raccontano” il romanzo e si lasciano affettuosamente raccontare a vicenda.

In a scorching summer of 1978, a boy sees his mother for the last time. It’s a farewell, but he doesn’t know it. On this lost embrace, Roberto Alajmo has built “L’estate del ’78” (Sellerio). One step after the other: Marco Di Stefano climbs them and on the novel he has created a musical work divided into ten chapters, a fluid tale that immerses itself in words. Each note, melody or track is a musical reflection, a concave mirror of stories and characters. “L’estate del ’78”, ten tracks that “tell” the novel and let themselves be told affectionately to each other.

«E’ strano immaginare che il proprio vissuto, la traccia che abbiamo lasciato di noi al passaggio nel mondo, possa riguardare anche altri. Eppure questo è il miracolo della letteratura, certe volte: quel che sembrerebbe il mio ombelico, si rivela essere l’ombelico del mondo. Non è semplice e nemmeno frequente, ma talvolta succede. La letteratura e la musica riescono ad essere fra loro “simpatiche”, a interagire misteriosamente.
E a risultare ancora più misteriosamente empatiche col resto del mondo. Non esiste una formula infallibile, ma un’alchimia che di volta in volta si viene a creare. Magari questa è una di quelle volte.»

“It is strange to imagine that our own experience, the trace we left of ourselves as we passed through the world, could also affect others. Nevertheless this is the miracle of literature, sometimes: what would seem to be my navel, turns out to be the navel of the world. It is not simple and not even frequent, but sometimes it happens. Literature and music manage to be “nice” to each other, to interact mysteriously. And to be even more mysteriously empathetic with the rest of the world. There is no infallible formula, but an alchemy that is created from time to time. This may be one of those times.”

Si approccia al pianoforte in tenera età inseguendo il suo istinto compositivo e iniziando da li un percorso decennale di studi di tecnica pianistica e composizione orchestrale con tre distinti maestri quali Giovanni D’Aquila a Palermo, Adriano Guarnieri a Bologna e Luc Brewaeys a Bruxelles. Il suo stile è semplice, strutturato e narrativo. Ogni sua composizione nasce per raccontare una storia e questa sua predisposizione verso la musica narrativa lo porta a collaborazioni artistiche con pittori, fotografi e scrittori, alla ricerca del perfetto connubio fra opera musicale e arte.

He approaches the piano at an early age, following his compositional instinct and starting from there a ten-year course of studies in piano technique and orchestral composition with three distinct masters such as Giovanni D’Aquila in Palermo, Adriano Guarnieri in Bologna and Luc Brewaeys in Brussels. His style is simple, structured and narrative. Each of his compositions born to tell a story and his predisposition towards narrative music leads him to artistic collaborations with painters, photographers and authors, in search of the perfect union between musical work and art.

Considerato dalla critica tra i migliori pianisti jazz italiani. E’ stato finalista e vincitore in concorsi internazionali esordendo nel panorama discografico giapponese con il disco “Exit for three” scalando rapidamente le classifiche di vendite. La Tower Records commenterà descrivendo Carnovale come la più grande sorpresa in Giappone dopo l’esordio di Bollani. Ha collaborato con grandi musicisti del panorama del jazz internazionale come Paul Jeffrey, Scott Hamilton, Pietro Tonolo, Paolino Dalla Porta, Fabrizio Bosso, Francesco Bearzatti, Rachel Gould, Rosario Bonaccorso e tanti altri.

Considered by critics as one of the best Italian jazz pianists he has been a finalist in various international competitions, at the same time he made his debut in the Japanese music scene with the record “Exit for three” climbing quickly the sales charts. Tower Records will comment describing Carnovale as the biggest surprise in Japan after Bollani’s debut. He has collaborated with great musicians of the international jazz scene such as Paul Jeffrey, Scott Hamilton, Pietro Tonolo, Paolino Dalla Porta, Fabrizio Bosso, Francesco Bearzatti, Rachel Gould, Rosario Bonaccorso and many others.

Questo album nasce da un sogno fatto una notte dell’estate del 2018. Un uomo dai capelli brizzolati cammina per le stradine di un antico borgo dell’entroterra siciliano con aria soddisfatta, serena. Tutto intorno case in pietra e dalle persiane colorate una musica comincia a spandersi per le stradine finché l’uomo di mezza età ne è sopraffatto e comincia a cantarne la melodia.
Questa melodia, rubata al sogno, è interamente divenuta la traccia «L’ultima volta di ogni cosa», lo snodo principale da cui tutto l’album si costruisce e si sviluppa. La lettura del libro ha poi ispirato la composizione dei restanti brani facendo incontrare i suoi personaggi con l’onirica melodia in uno spazio introspettivo e emozionale.

This album is born from a dream made a summer night of 2018. A man with gray hair walks through the little streets of an ancient borough in the Sicilian hinterland with a satisfied, serene air. All around stone houses and colorful shutters a music begins to spread through the streets until the middle-aged man is overwhelmed and begins to sing the melody.
This melody, stolen from the dream, has entirely become the track “L’ultima volta di ogni cosa”, the main junction from which the whole album is built and developed. The reading of the book then inspired the composition of the remaining songs, bringing together his characters with the dreamlike melody in an introspective and emotional space.
